In a remarkable discovery, workers unearthed 113 silver coins from a clay pot during an excavation in Bhind district’s Gohad Nagar on Thursday. The excavation, part of a water pipeline installation under the Nal-Jal Yojana, took place near Ward 11, close to the Kaliya Kanth Temple. Authorities have determined the coins date back to the Mughal era, approximately between the 1700s and 1800s AD.

Discovery During Pipeline Work
The clay pot containing the coins was found near the homes of local residents Ramkumar Singh Gurjar and Punjab Singh Gurjar. As soon as the laborers uncovered the pot, it was reportedly taken by the residents, sparking curiosity and commotion in the area. News of the discovery quickly spread across the neighborhood, attracting significant public attention.
Authorities Seize Coins
Upon learning of the incident, a team comprising Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Saurabh Kumar, Tehsildar Vishram Shakya, Gohad Police Station In-Charge Manish Dhakad, and Patwari Anuj Sharma reached the site. The team confiscated the coins and washed them for further examination. The excavation site and a 500-meter radius around it have been declared a restricted area. The administration has also deployed machinery to continue digging in the area.
Historical Significance and Examination
Professor Iqbal Ali, an expert in historical studies, has suggested that the coins may belong to the late Mughal period, around the 1800s AD. Preliminary observations reveal that the coins bear Urdu inscriptions, including the term “Alkhami.” Professor Ali theorized that “Alkhami” could have been the name of a currency or mint during the era. Further clarity on their historical significance will be determined following a detailed investigation by the Archaeological Department.
Increased Security at the Site
Given the historical importance of the find, local authorities have intensified security around the site to prevent unauthorized access or tampering. Officials are now focused on uncovering any additional artifacts that may provide more insights into the region’s rich history.
