May 31, 2025 — Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) experienced a major global outage on Friday, affecting tens of thousands of users across both mobile and web platforms.

According to real-time outage tracker Downdetector, more than 34,000 users reported issues with the platform around 4:19 p.m. ET, with the number of complaints gradually decreasing to 1,500 by 4:42 p.m. ET. Users encountered various problems, including 503 errors, failed timelines, and disrupted direct messaging services.
Majority of Outages on the App
Downdetector’s analytics revealed that 61% of the affected users reported problems while using the X mobile app, while 38% faced issues on the web interface. A few users attempting to log in were met with an unusual message: “Welcome to X!”, further confirming the platform-wide glitch.
The X Developer Platform’s status page also acknowledged the disruption, labeling it a “site-wide outage” and listing multiple impacted endpoints:
-
Get User Timeline
-
Get Tweets
-
Get DM (Direct Messages)
-
Create Tweet
This technical breakdown left many users unable to post or view content in real time, a rare but significant failure for a platform with global influence.
Musk’s Government Exit Coincides with Outage
The outage came shortly after Elon Musk, owner of X and CEO of Tesla, made a public appearance at the White House to announce the conclusion of his term as a Special Government Employee under the Department of Government Efficiency.
Musk stated that while his official role has ended, he will now lead a newly formed austerity task force, tasked with eliminating “fraud and waste” in federal spending. He added that the DOGE mission—a tongue-in-cheek acronym referencing both the Dogecoin meme and government efficiency—would “only strengthen over time.”
Despite stepping down formally, White House officials confirmed Musk will continue to act as an unofficial advisor and may participate in future discussions.
Previous Outage Also Reported in May
This isn’t the first technical hiccup for X in recent days. On May 27, around 7:00 PM IST, users in both India and the United States reported connectivity issues. In India, around 25 users were affected, while in the U.S., over 400 complaints were logged.
At that time:
-
41% of users reported mobile app issues
-
40% flagged web access problems
-
9% experienced server connectivity errors
These recurring service disruptions have prompted concerns about platform stability, especially as X continues expanding into more content-heavy formats such as long-form posts and video livestreams.
Status as of Now
As of this writing, the platform’s core functions appear to be restored for most users, though X has not issued an official statement confirming the cause of the outage or providing guarantees against future incidents.
