Istanbul, 3 September (Kiran News): Wison New Energies has signed an engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) contract with Turkish Petroleum (TPAO) for a floating production unit (FPU) to be used in the third phase of the Sakarya gas field development, located in the Black Sea.

This development is expected to significantly enhance Türkiye’s natural gas production capacity and support efforts to optimise the country’s energy mix.
Advanced Deep-Water Technology
The new FPU will be central to phase three of the Sakarya project and is designed to withstand harsh deep-water conditions in the Black Sea, as well as comply with the 56-metre air draft restrictions of the Bosphorus Strait. The unit is engineered to export up to 25 million standard cubic metres of gas per day and includes facilities for produced water treatment at a rate of 1,350 standard cubic metres per day. Additionally, it features a monoethylene glycol regeneration and injection system with a capacity of 2,503 cubic metres per day to ensure hydrate inhibition. The FPU is expected to have a minimum design life of thirty years.
Strategic Milestone for Türkiye
Liu Hongjun, Chairman of Wison New Energies, said, “This collaboration represents a major milestone in Wison’s internationalisation strategy and is a significant breakthrough in our deep-water engineering capabilities. We look forward to supporting the goals of the Sakarya Gas Field through innovative floating solutions and efficient resource integration, contributing to the advancement of Turkey’s energy sector.”
The Sakarya gas field, discovered in August 2020, lies about 170 kilometres offshore in the Black Sea and holds an estimated 405 billion cubic metres of gas reserves at a depth of 2,150 metres. As the largest natural gas discovery in Türkiye’s history, the field is being developed in three phases by TPAO.
Supporting National Energy Security
The third phase of Sakarya’s development is regarded as a cornerstone of Türkiye’s energy strategy, aimed at increasing domestic gas supply, reducing dependence on imports, and strengthening national energy security.
TPAO CEO Ahmet Türkoğlu stated, “We are pleased to collaborate with Wison New Energies to advance the Sakarya Phase 3 project. Wison’s expertise and delivery experience in floating facilities align well with our project requirements. We look forward to working closely together to ensure the project’s successful delivery.”
In a related development, last April, Wison New Energies was selected to conduct a feasibility study for a new floating liquefied natural gas facility in Suriname’s Offshore Block 52.
