New Delhi, February 23: Vitamin deficiencies often bring to mind calcium, iron, or vitamin D, but there is another vitamin that poses serious health risks when deficient: Vitamin K. Many people are unaware of its importance. Vitamin K plays a crucial role in helping blood clot when needed, strengthening bones, and protecting blood vessels. A deficiency can lead to gradual health issues.
Scientifically, Vitamin K is a fat-soluble compound that activates several proteins in the body. These proteins assist in blood clotting, preventing excessive bleeding from injuries. Consequently, a lack of Vitamin K can turn minor injuries into serious problems. Symptoms such as unexplained nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or easy bruising may indicate a weakening ability to clot blood.
The role of Vitamin K extends beyond blood health; it also strengthens bones. It aids in the production of a protein called osteocalcin, which binds calcium to bones. A deficiency in Vitamin K can hinder calcium from properly integrating into bones, leading to gradual weakening and an increased risk of diseases like osteoporosis.
Moreover, Vitamin K is closely linked to heart health. It helps prevent unnecessary calcium buildup in the arteries. When levels are low, calcium can accumulate in the arteries, causing them to harden, which complicates blood flow to the heart and raises the risk of heart disease.
For newborns, Vitamin K is even more critical. At birth, babies have very low stores of this vitamin and lack the gut bacteria necessary to produce it. This deficiency can lead to a serious condition known as Hemorrhagic Disease of the Newborn, which poses a risk of internal bleeding. Therefore, doctors recommend administering a Vitamin K injection immediately after birth to prevent this life-threatening situation.
