New Delhi, May 1: Vishwajit Sahay has been appointed as the new Secretary of Defence Finance in the Ministry of Defence, assuming office on May 1. He is a senior officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service from the 1990 batch and previously served as the Controller General of Defence Accounts. Sahay has played a crucial role in managing the financial arrangements within the defence sector.
Sahay holds a degree from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, and is also a law graduate. According to the Ministry of Defence, he possesses over 30 years of extensive experience in defence finance and administration. Throughout his long career, he has held several significant positions.
He has served as Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Department of Science and Technology, as well as Joint Secretary in the Heavy Industries Department and Finance Manager in the Acquisition Wing of the Ministry of Defence. Additionally, Sahay has worked as a Director in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The Ministry of Defence noted that Sahay has also undertaken several key responsibilities within the Defence Accounts Department, including roles as Principal Controller and Joint Controller related to pensions in Prayagraj. His international experience is noteworthy, having represented India in training programs at prestigious institutions in the UK and Germany.
His new appointment is considered significant for the Ministry of Defence, with expectations that his experience will strengthen financial management and strategic decision-making processes within the ministry. Sahay’s extensive background in the Defence Accounts Department, including his services in important positions such as Joint Controller and Special Controller, further enhances his qualifications.
He has participated in training programs at the University of Cambridge in the UK and a leading security studies institution in Germany, providing him with a global perspective and experience. His appointment is seen as a crucial step for the Ministry of Defence, expected to bolster financial management and improve strategic decision-making processes.
In another appointment, Bharat Kheda has been designated as Secretary in the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.
