Unseasonal Rain, Hailstorms Lash Several Districts in Madhya Pradesh; Lightning Kills One in Seoni

Weather Expected to Remain Disturbed for Next Two Days, Meteorological Department Issues Warning

Bhopal, April 3, 2025: Madhya Pradesh experienced yet another sudden weather change as unseasonal rains accompanied by hailstorms hit multiple districts, including Chhindwara, Seoni, Balaghat, Mandla, Dindori, Umaria, Mandsaur, Dhar, and Rajgarh on Wednesday. The sudden downpour damaged standing and harvested wheat crops, raising concerns among farmers across the state. Tragically, lightning struck and killed a young farmer in Seoni district.

Rain and Hailstorms Reported Across MP, Farmers Distressed

According to the Madhya Pradesh Meteorological Department, rainfall was recorded across various locations over the past 24 hours. Sausar recorded the highest rainfall at 11mm, while Chhindwara registered 2mm, Seoni 1.6mm, and Jabalpur 0.5mm. Even the usually dry and warm Rajgarh saw an unexpected hailstorm in the evening, alarming farmers whose wheat harvest is ongoing.

Hailstorms were specifically reported in:

  • Machalpur (Rajgarh district)

  • Manawar (Dhar district)

  • Garoth and Shamgarh areas (Mandsaur district)

Farmers expressed worries, highlighting that heavy rains and hail could severely impact harvested wheat currently lying in the fields, potentially leading to significant economic losses.

Lightning Strikes Claim Life in Seoni

In a tragic incident in Seoni district’s Bineki village, a 24-year-old farmer named Amit Gumasta died after being struck by lightning. Gumasta was supervising the harvesting of wheat crops when the sudden downpour and lightning occurred around 4 pm Wednesday.

Weather Alert Issued by Meteorological Department

Senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre, PK Raikwar, said, “Due to current weather systems, thunderstorms accompanied by rain and strong winds will persist in several parts of Madhya Pradesh until Thursday. Weather conditions will begin clearing from Friday onwards, leading to an increase in temperatures.”

Currently, the lowest night temperature recorded was 14.4°C in Narsinghpur, while Pachmarhi registered a night temperature of 18.8°C. The highest daytime temperature reached 40.2°C in Narsinghpur.

Residents have been advised to exercise caution due to expected adverse weather conditions, especially farmers who are vulnerable due to the ongoing harvesting season.
