Two Israeli soldiers were killed in an attack by Palestinian gunmen at a military checkpoint in Hebron, escalating military operations in the region. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that three additional soldiers sustained minor injuries during the incident.

This violence comes just days before Israel’s elections, marking a significant test for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Following the attack, Netanyahu announced a full closure of the West Bank, though he later adjusted this to a potential cordon around Hebron and Halhul.

The Israeli military is conducting a counterterrorism operation in the Hebron area, aiming to locate and neutralize terrorist infrastructure. According to a joint statement from the IDF and the Israeli Security Agency (ISA), operations include targeted searches and demolitions of structures deemed a security threat. Residents in the affected area face strict security checks as they leave.

Israeli human rights group B’Tselem criticized the government’s plan to forcibly displace Palestinian residents from the area. Executive director Yuli Novak condemned the actions as part of a broader history of mass displacements. As the operations commenced, Israeli forces began demolishing buildings in the Farsh al-Hawa neighborhood.

Both assailants involved in the attack were killed by Israeli forces shortly afterward. The IDF discovered a vehicle linked to the gunmen filled with ammunition intended for a larger attack, according to Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, the IDF Chief of Staff.

Netanyahu emphasized the need for an aggressive stance against Hamas, stating, “We will pursue Hamas terrorists and those who sent them, wherever they are and at all times.”

In contrast, Hamas praised the attack without claiming responsibility, indicating ongoing tensions in the region. Former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot expressed sympathy for the injured, stating, “Together with all the people of Israel, I pray for the full and speedy recovery of those wounded in the attack.”
