OpenAI has announced the release of GPT-6 Cyber, an advanced AI model focused on cybersecurity and vulnerability research. This launch, which took place on November 5, aims to help security researchers identify and exploit software weaknesses.

According to OpenAI, GPT-6 Cyber has contributed to the discovery of 948 Linux privilege-escalation exploits and identified 81 new high-severity vulnerabilities in Firefox. These exploits represent significant findings for software security, as many vulnerabilities can be hard to detect in extensive codebases.

The model has shown improvements over its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Cyber. It achieved a score of 48.5% on the ExploitGym benchmark, up from 32.1%. This performance boost suggests an enhancement in its capabilities for automated vulnerability research.

Access to GPT-6 Cyber is limited to selected customers in the Daybreak Red program, designed for authorized security activities. OpenAI stated that the model operates within approved boundaries, preventing unauthorized exploitation incidents. It is classified as “Critical” under OpenAI’s cybersecurity preparedness framework, indicating its heightened capabilities compared to earlier models.

OpenAI’s research process involved examining 2,308 potential vulnerabilities and verifying over 1,700, leading to the creation of the reported exploits. The focus was on local privilege escalation, and these exploits do not imply arbitrary remote access vulnerabilities over the internet.

The model also demonstrated reliability in maintaining boundaries, avoiding the exploitation of out-of-scope services in 99.93% of tests without safety prompts; this increased to 100% with prompts. The implications for security teams are substantial, enabling quicker identification of vulnerabilities and reducing the risk of exploitation by malicious actors.

The findings have already led to Mozilla beginning to deploy fixes for the identified Firefox vulnerabilities. OpenAI’s involvement in cybersecurity shows the necessity of AI tools that can locate vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them.

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Cyber represents an advancement in the automated identification of software vulnerabilities. However, the company recognizes the potential risks associated with such powerful tools, reinforcing the need for strict monitoring and human oversight to ensure they do not fall into the wrong hands.
