Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the outcome of talks in Doha regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz hinges on the United States’ response. Araghchi indicated that while consultations are ongoing, a meeting with an American delegation is not planned.

The discussions in Qatar aim to reduce the timeframe for reopening the strategic waterway from five days to a proposed two days, contingent on US compliance with Iranian conditions. Araghchi said, “The Qatari side proposed shortening the implementation period of the Iranian proposal to five days. We have reached a proposal at this stage that reduces the implementation period to two days.”

Iran’s demands include lifting sanctions imposed after the Islamabad memorandum, reducing US military presence in the region, restoring oil waivers, and the release of Iranian funds currently frozen in Qatar. Araghchi added that recognizing Tehran’s shipping routes in Hormuz is also a key condition.

Should these demands be met, Iran believes it would pave the way for renewed negotiations with the US on unresolved issues. Meanwhile, the United States has warned that it cannot allow Iran to disrupt regional and global economies. US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Donald Blome stated that diplomatic options remain but emphasized American patience is limited.

Blome described the US approach: “The hand of negotiation has been extended, and those channels have continued to be open and active.” However, he affirmed that should maritime traffic not normalize, the US is prepared to explore other avenues.

In light of recent tensions, US President Donald Trump mentioned in a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US has significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities, leaving only limited targets remaining that could be addressed swiftly.

Iran has responded robustly to potential US actions. Iranian Defence Minister Mehrdad Akhlaghi warned of a strong response to any aggression against Tehran, suggesting that renewed conflicts could escalate beyond control, stating, “Those who pose threats will not dictate the scope, timing, or consequences of Iran’s defensive response.”
