Tragic Fire Accident Claims Lives of Two Firefighters

Udaipur, November 2: A tragic road accident on the Udaipur-Ahmedabad National Highway-48 resulted in the deaths of two firefighters who were trapped and burned alive. The incident occurred near Makadjapa village in the Rishabhdev police station area on Sunday morning. An out-of-control trailer collided with a fire truck coming from the opposite direction. The impact was so severe that the cabin of the fire truck was crushed, and a fire broke out just seconds after the collision. The two firefighters inside were unable to escape and succumbed to the flames.
The driver of the fire truck and the trailer driver sustained serious injuries and were admitted to MB Hospital in Udaipur for treatment. Following the accident, chaos ensued on the highway, leading to a traffic jam that stretched for nearly a kilometer and lasted for about an hour.
According to Rishabhdev police station officer Hemant Ahari, the accident occurred around 11 AM. The fire truck, belonging to a private company, was traveling from Gujarat to Udaipur when it was struck by a trailer that had first collided with another trailer ahead of it. The out-of-control trailer veered into the opposite lane, crashing into the fire truck.
Witnesses reported that the fire spread rapidly, leaving no time for the trapped firefighters to escape. Local residents managed to rescue the fire truck driver from the flames, but the two firefighters remained trapped in the cabin. It took nearly an hour to bring the fire under control, after which the bodies of the firefighters were recovered, severely burned and unrecognizable. Efforts are underway to identify the deceased through their employer.
Speeding has been identified as a major cause of road accidents in Rajasthan, accounting for 63% of incidents. In 2025, the state recorded 23,820 road accidents, with 15,647 attributed to overspeeding, resulting in approximately 7,600 fatalities. Although the total number of accidents decreased by 1,018 compared to 2024, the death toll rose by 307, highlighting the severe consequences of reckless driving. This accident on the Udaipur-Ahmedabad highway underscores the dangers of negligence and uncontrolled speed on the roads.
