Raipur, September 22 (Kiran News): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for thunderstorms and lightning in 16 districts of Chhattisgarh, including Balrampur, Surguja, Raigarh, Baloda Bazar, Narayanpur, Sukma and Dantewada. Light rainfall is also expected in these regions today.
According to the IMD, another spell of rainfall may return to the state over the next one to two days. The southwest monsoon withdrawal line is currently passing through Bathinda, Fathehabad, Pilani, Ajmer, Deesa and Bhuj. In addition, a cyclonic circulation is active over the northeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
The department has predicted that under its influence, a new low-pressure system is likely to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around September 25. Moving west-northwestwards, it is expected to intensify into a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coasts by September 26.
The IMD has cautioned that the retreating monsoon may bring heavy rainfall to several parts of Chhattisgarh. It has advised people in the affected districts — Balrampur-Surguja, Korea, Jashpur, Surajpur, Kabirdham, Rajnandgaon, Kanker, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Bijapur, Dantewada, Sukma, Gariaband, Mahasamund, Dhamtari and Bemetara — to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. Residents outdoors have been urged to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and lightning.
In the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall was recorded in some parts of the state. Rajnandgaon district reported the highest rainfall of 60.0 mm. The maximum temperature in Raipur was recorded at 34°C.
