Hyderabad, May 1: Telangana’s new Director General of Police (DGP) C.V. Anand announced on Friday that the police department will undergo reorganization as the Maoist threat has nearly diminished. This restructuring aims to focus on emerging crime areas.
During a press conference after assuming office, Anand stated that a review of the department’s operations will be conducted, with improvements planned in certain areas. He noted that special units like the Greyhounds and Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) were established in the 1980s and 1990s to tackle the Naxalite issue.
“With the Maoist problem nearly resolved, it is not practical to maintain such a large workforce,” he said. Emphasizing the low likelihood of a resurgence of the Maoist movement, the DGP assured that precautions will be taken to prevent any re-emergence of the issue.
Anand highlighted the need to adopt new strategies to address emerging challenges and to redeploy personnel accordingly. He mentioned that some critical units, previously lacking sufficient attention and manpower due to staff shortages, will be strengthened.
Referring to vacancies, the DGP stated that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister have instructed the department to focus on identifying unnecessary attachments and deployments as part of the reorganization process.
He emphasized that road safety will be one of their top priorities. A Traffic Management and Road Safety Bureau will be established, modeled after the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCBS) and the Elite Action Group (EAGLE) created in recent years. This new body will work towards standardizing traffic management methods and ensuring uniform enforcement of traffic rules across the state to reduce accidents and fatalities.
Anand revealed that approximately 8,500 people die in road accidents annually across the state. Highlighting the severity of traffic issues, he noted that around 1,600 new vehicles hit the roads daily in the Greater Hyderabad area.
With revolutionary changes and innovations across all sectors in recent years, Anand stated that Telangana Police has emerged as the top police force in the country and will continue to leverage the latest technology under his leadership.
Acknowledging the police’s good record in maintaining law and order, he admitted that some challenges arose due to ground-level officers’ failure to anticipate communal incidents and other law and order issues. “I will ensure that all officers improve in this capacity,” he added.
He praised the efforts of TGCBS in combating cyber crimes and stressed the need for active participation from ground-level officers, superintendents, and police commissioners.
The DGP also mentioned that controlling drug-related issues will be one of their major priorities. He noted that EAGLE and the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) are performing well, and all Superintendents of Police should also lead campaigns against drugs.
To prevent substance abuse in schools and colleges, the department will focus on awareness initiatives. Anti-drug committees in educational institutions will be activated with the help of education and other departments.
Upon his arrival at the DGP office, senior police officials warmly welcomed Anand. He received a ‘Guard of Honor’ from the police and later officially took charge as the head of the police force.
