Forest Department on Alert as Lioness Falls Ill at Sajjangarh Biological Park

Udaipur, May 29 (Udaipur Kiran) – The Forest Department and veterinary team have gone on alert after Sunaina, the female Asiatic lioness housed in the lion safari at Sajjangarh Biological Park, fell ill over the past three days. Officials said the lioness stopped eating and started showing unusual behaviour, following which continuous treatment and monitoring were initiated under the supervision of senior veterinary officer Dr. Himanshu Vyas.

According to officials, during a routine animal check-up on May 23, Sunaina did not consume food. A detailed medical examination was conducted on May 24, during which her heart rate and respiratory rate were found to be abnormal. Her body temperature was recorded at 106.3 degrees Fahrenheit, which was significantly above normal levels.

Considering the seriousness of the condition, veterinarians immediately shifted the lioness into a squeeze cage and administered fluids. Doctors also gave antipyretic injections, antibiotics, antacids and multivitamins to control the fever and stabilise her condition. Officials said her temperature returned to normal after treatment.

Forest officials further stated that Sunaina was later offered meat, chicken and chicken soup, but on May 25 she only licked the soup once or twice and refused to eat food.

On May 26, the lioness again refused food and displayed unusually irritable behaviour. After considerable effort, doctors managed to shift her back into the squeeze cage for another examination. Her body temperature was then recorded at 100.8 degrees Fahrenheit, which falls within the normal range.

Despite the improvement in temperature, doctors have continued antibiotics and other medicines as a precautionary measure. Officials said Sunaina remains under special observation and a team of veterinary experts is continuously monitoring her movement, food intake and overall health condition to ensure a speedy recovery.
