Mumbai Indians Part Ways with Mahela Jayawardene as Head Coach
Mumbai Indians and Mahela Jayawardene mutually part ways after a disappointing season, ending a successful coaching tenure.
Mumbai, October 17 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Mumbai Indians have announced their decision to part ways with Mahela Jayawardene, concluding his tenure as head coach. This move comes in the wake of a disappointing season in 2026, where the five-time IPL champions managed only four victories.
The team is now preparing to make changes to its coaching and leadership structure ahead of the next season. Factors such as injuries, player availability issues, and reported discontent in the dressing room contributed to a challenging year for the franchise. Reports suggest that several candidates have already been shortlisted to fill the head coach position, with interviews expected to take place next week.
Jayawardene’s coaching stint, which began in 2017, was marked by significant success, including three IPL titles. Under his leadership, the Mumbai Indians triumphed in 2017, 2019, and 2020, with back-to-back championships in the latter two years. After stepping down as head coach, the former Sri Lankan captain served as the franchise’s Global Head of Performance from 2022 to 2024, overseeing coaching, scouting, and strategic planning for the international teams.
Reflecting on his journey with the Mumbai Indians, Jayawardene expressed gratitude for the relationships and achievements that defined his time with the franchise. “Mumbai Indians have been a very special part of my journey for over a decade,” he stated. He thanked team owners Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their unwavering support and trust throughout his tenure.
Nita M. Ambani acknowledged Jayawardene’s contributions, praising his calm leadership and deep commitment to the game. She expressed heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire Mumbai Indians family, highlighting the memories created together and affirming that he will always remain a part of the MI family.
As both parties move forward, Jayawardene wishes the team continued success in the years to come.
