RANCHI, March 23, 2025 – A powerful storm accompanied by intense rainfall and thunder battered Ranchi and several districts across Jharkhand in the early hours of Sunday, leaving a trail of destruction. The adverse weather system, which struck at around 3:00 AM and lasted until 5:45 AM, caused widespread power outages, damaged homes, uprooted trees, and disrupted daily life.
Widespread Damage Across Multiple Districts
The impact of the sudden storm was felt in East Singhbhum (Chaibasa and Jamshedpur), Seraikela, Khunti, Chatra, Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, and Ranchi. According to local authorities and eyewitnesses, trees were uprooted, power lines snapped, and residences suffered structural damage, particularly in low-lying and densely populated areas.
In Ranchi city, the storm plunged large areas into darkness. Electricity supply was severely disrupted, with many neighborhoods left without power for over five hours. Restoration efforts were underway since dawn, and power was gradually reinstated around 9:00 AM in key urban zones. The storm had torn down overhead lines and poles in several localities, adding to the delay.
Communication and Transport Disrupted
Frustrated residents inundated electricity department offices with calls, seeking updates and assistance. Roads such as Kanke Road, Harmu Road, and Ratu Road were particularly affected due to fallen trees, which caused significant traffic obstruction and posed safety risks for early morning commuters.
In the Upper Bazaar area, an old tree collapsed on a residential structure, completely shattering the roof. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. Kotwali police station in-charge, Adikant Mahato, confirmed that although a tree fell on a house, there were no reports of human injury.

Emergency response teams, municipal workers, and the power department were deployed across affected districts to clear debris, restore essential services, and ensure public safety. With weather conditions stabilizing post 6:00 AM, operations to remove fallen trees and damaged electric poles picked up pace.
Local officials have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid venturing near damaged power infrastructure or unstable trees. Relief operations are ongoing, and updates are being coordinated between district authorities and disaster response units.
