Raipur, March 28: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted adverse weather conditions in Chhattisgarh for the coming days due to an active weather system. According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is expected in one or two places on March 29, accompanied by thunderstorms and winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h in some areas. Similar conditions are anticipated on March 30, with a possibility of hailstorms.
In a tragic incident in the Bakna Kala Gram Panchayat of the Lundra police station area in Surguja district, a 13-year-old schoolgirl named Sanmatiya lost her life due to lightning. The fatal accident occurred on Friday evening when the girl sought shelter under a tree during sudden heavy rain and winds while she was grazing her cattle in nearby fields. Police stated that if she had not taken refuge under the tree, her life might have been saved.
Authorities have repeatedly urged residents, especially students and farmers, to avoid seeking shelter under tall trees or in open fields during storms and to stay indoors in safe locations. Residents of rural and tribal areas are advised to exercise caution, avoiding standing under trees, using electronic devices outdoors, or remaining in open fields, and to seek shelter in sturdy buildings. Farmers are also urged to protect their standing crops from potential hail and strong winds.
In a separate incident in Korea district, lightning resulted in the death of seven livestock. Police arrived at the scene on Saturday morning and conducted a preliminary investigation. The carcasses have been sent to the local community health center for post-mortem, and it is expected that they will be returned to the families afterward. This tragedy occurred amidst sudden and dramatic changes in Chhattisgarh’s weather.
