Samsung is reportedly preparing to launch its first tri-fold smartphone in the second half of 2025, according to a report from Sisa Journal. The South Korean tech giant, known for its innovative approach to foldable technology, is expected to unveil the device alongside the next-generation Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip models during its second Galaxy Unpacked event, typically held in July or August.

Limited Availability Due to Complex Production
Despite the high anticipation, Samsung plans to produce only 300,000 units of the tri-fold phone initially. This limited production run is attributed to the complexity of manufacturing a triple-folding display and the associated challenges in ensuring durability and performance. The device is expected to be available in South Korea and select Asian markets, with broader availability dependent on its initial success.
Innovative G-Shaped Folding Mechanism
Samsung’s tri-fold phone will reportedly feature a G-shaped folding mechanism, which means the screen will fold inward twice, resulting in three display panels and two internal hinges. This approach is designed to enhance durability by minimizing the risk of accidental damage when the phone is not in use.
Samsung’s design contrasts with the Huawei Mate XT, which utilizes an S or Z-shaped folding mechanism that folds both inward and outward. By opting for a G-shaped fold, Samsung aims to improve the overall lifespan of the device while offering a unique user experience.
No Under-Display Camera Technology
Unlike Samsung’s Z Fold 3 and later models, which feature Under Display Camera (UDC) technology, the tri-fold phone will reportedly skip this feature. The focus appears to be on perfecting the folding mechanism and ensuring display durability rather than integrating advanced camera tech at this stage.
High Price Tag Expected
Given the intricate engineering and cutting-edge design, the Samsung tri-fold phone is expected to carry a premium price tag higher than existing foldable devices. For reference, the Huawei Mate XT is priced at CNY 20,000 (approximately Rs 2,34,162) in China. While Samsung’s pricing details are yet to be confirmed, industry experts anticipate a similar or higher price point for the tri-fold device.
