Udaipur : Shantilal Nagda, a retired RAS officer was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in his paternal temple here in Devali area under Ambamata police station on monday late evening. Before hanging himself, he had attempted to slit his wrists too, police said. The news came as a rude shock for the city people as Nagda (63) had served on many prominent postions including Devasthan, Excise departments and as registrar of two universities in Udaipur. He had a fair image and was known for his simplicity and cordial relations with everyone. Depression is being speculated as the reason behind the act, though, the deceased didnt leave any suicide note behind, cops said.
“Nagda came to the temple everyday and spent most of the time there. It was a routine for him to take rest in the room that was built on the second floor of the temple. On Mondayafternoon, he went upstairs and when he didnt come down even after 8 pm, the temple priest went looking for him” Netrapal SIngh, SHO Ambamata informed. The priest saw blood drops in one of the room and when he knocked the other one, it was locked from inside and Nagda didnt respond. Neighbors broke open the door to find the man hanging, the officer said. The cremation was conducted on Tuesday afternoon.
Nagda had retired as Devasthan commissioner three years ago and since then had been complaining of boredom. His wife had recently been promoted as Prinicipal and had been transferred to Chittorgarh which perhaps had been a cause of worry , family sources said. However, the family members are in a state of shock as they had the least idea that the officer would take such an extreme step without any solid reason. Nagda’s elder son is a lecturer at the Law college while his daughter in law serves as an accounts officer in the PWD. His younger son is an IITian and lives in Mumbai.
