Islamabad, June 15: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced in Parliament on Monday that a signing ceremony for a purported historic agreement between the United States and Iran will take place on June 19 in Geneva, with Pakistan serving as the host.
During his address to the National Assembly, Sharif stated, “This agreement is a significant step towards ending the three-month-long conflict.” He claimed that under this agreement, the US and Iran have agreed to cease hostilities, lift sanctions on Iran, and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the leading daily Dawn, Sharif mentioned that the conflict began at the end of February when the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran. He noted that throughout the conflict, Pakistan played an active role in restoring peace and facilitated preliminary talks between both parties in Islamabad in April.
The Prime Minister asserted that a ceasefire was made possible through Pakistan’s mediation, which remains in effect, although the situation remains sensitive. He proudly referred to this as a “historic achievement.”
In his address, Sharif emphasized that this is not just an agreement between two countries but a victory for peace and dialogue. He acknowledged that the situation had nearly collapsed multiple times during negotiations, but the efforts of Pakistan and other mediating countries kept the process ongoing.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and other leaders praised the Prime Minister’s efforts and the role of military leadership. Opposition leader Syed Latif Khosa urged caution until the process is finalized.
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump revealed on Truth Social that an agreement had been reached, mentioning the reopening of Hormuz and the lifting of US sanctions. Iran also issued a statement regarding the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
In contrast, Israel has refused to acknowledge the peace agreement. Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that their military will not withdraw from southern Lebanon and will remain deployed indefinitely in the security zones established in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza.
