Historic inauguration witnessed by over 200,000 faithful at St. Peter’s Square
Vatican City, May 19 — In a landmark moment for the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, the first-ever pontiff from the United States, officially began his papacy on Sunday with a powerful message of unity and reconciliation. Addressing a gathering of more than 200,000 worshippers, heads of state, religious leaders, and royal dignitaries at St. Peter’s Square, the 69-year-old Augustinian missionary called for healing the divisions plaguing both the Church and the world.

During his inaugural address, Pope Leo XIV spoke candidly about the polarization within the Catholic community and society at large. “Let us choose the path of compassion over confrontation, understanding over division,” he said, emphasizing the need to listen to all voices within the Church’s 1.4 billion followers.
The emotional high point of the ceremony came as the Pope received two key symbols of papal authority — the pallium, a woolen stole symbolizing his pastoral role, and the Fisherman’s Ring, a signet bearing the image of Saint Peter. Upon receiving the ring, Pope Leo XIV paused briefly, clasped his hands in prayer, and appeared deeply moved by the weight of the role now upon him.
In a gesture of outreach, the Pope greeted cheering crowds from the popemobile, blessing children and waving to pilgrims waving flags from the U.S., Peru, and various other nations. His warm and humble demeanor set a tone of inclusivity that many observers noted as a departure from more hierarchical traditions.
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance led the American delegation at the event and had paid respects a day earlier at the tomb of the late Pope Francis. Vance was among the last global dignitaries to meet the late pontiff.
Pope Leo XIV assumes leadership at a time when the Church faces internal debates over issues such as doctrine, social justice, and the role of laity. Acknowledging these challenges, he urged the Church to remain unified and committed to its spiritual mission.
As the new papacy begins, observers across the globe are closely watching whether the American-born Pope can navigate the Church through its modern-day crossroads while preserving its ancient roots.
