Mumbai, July 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the Indian women’s cricket team for their historic victory against England at Lords. In the 136th episode of his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program, PM Modi described this achievement as significant.
He stated, “The Indian women’s cricket team has won their first Test match at Lords. This is a historic victory. Our team won by a massive margin of 270 runs. However, it is not just about the score; this was the first Test match for women in the history of Lords. In 1983, our team won its first Cricket World Cup at this very ground. Now, our women power has brought glory to the nation here.”
In the only Test match played against England at Lords, the Indian team scored 285 runs in their first innings. In response, the entire England team was bowled out for 170 runs. In their second innings, India declared at 341 runs after losing 7 wickets, setting a daunting target of 457 runs for England. The England team was eventually dismissed for 186 runs. Kranti Gaud became the first bowler to take five wickets at Lords, while Yastika Bhatia made history as the first woman to score a century at this iconic venue, scoring 113 runs.
The Prime Minister also congratulated PV Sindhu for winning the Japan Open title, stating, “PV Sindhu has become the first Indian to win the Japan Open. The nation is proud of her achievement.” Sindhu secured the title by defeating Akane Yamaguchi in the finals with scores of 21-17, 21-17, marking her first BWF title in two years.
