New Delhi, August 12 (Udaipur Kiran): The United States topped the medal tally at the Paris Olympics 2024 with a total of 126 medals, including 40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze medals.
China secured the second position with 91 medals, comprising 40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze medals. Japan claimed the third spot with 45 medals, which included 20 gold, 12 silver, and 13 bronze medals.
India, with a total of 6 medals, ranked 71st in the medal tally. The Indian contingent won one silver medal and five bronze medals.
A team of 117 Indian athletes participated in the 2024 Olympics. Manu Bhaker won India’s first medal, a bronze, and became the first Indian woman to win a medal in Olympic shooting. She also made history by winning another bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol event with Sarabjot Singh, making her the first Indian to win two medals in a single Olympic edition. Their medal was also the first team medal for India in shooting.
Swapnil Kusale added to the medal count by winning the third shooting medal for India, marking the country’s biggest haul in this sport at a single Olympics. His bronze was the first for India in the 50m rifle three positions event.
The Indian men’s hockey team repeated their Tokyo 2020 success by securing bronze in Paris. Neeraj Chopra further enhanced his Olympic legacy by winning a silver in javelin throw, making him India’s most successful individual Olympian.
Aman Sehrawat won a bronze in wrestling, becoming India’s youngest Olympic medalist.
Despite these achievements, India faced major disappointments at Paris 2024. The country missed out on six potential medals, with athletes like Lakshya Sen, Mirabai Chanu, and Manu Bhaker finishing fourth in their events, just shy of a podium finish.
Additionally, the mixed team in archery, featuring Dheeraj Bomma Devara and Ankita Bhakat, narrowly missed a medal, losing in the bronze medal match. However, they made history by becoming the first Indian archers to reach an Olympic medal match.
In badminton, the star duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, despite being in great form, lost in the men’s doubles semifinals and missed out on a medal. PV Sindhu also fell short of achieving a hat-trick of Olympic medals, failing to secure a medal in her third consecutive Olympics. Veteran archer Deepika Kumari, despite her extensive experience and success in non-Olympic events, could not bring home a medal.
Boxers Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain also could not secure the much-anticipated medals for the country. The disqualification of Vinesh Phogat just before the historic women’s 50kg final added to the nation’s woes.
