Drone and Artillery Attack on Rohingya Muslims Trying to Flee from Myanmar to Bangladesh, 200 Dead

Drone and Artillery Attack on Rohingya Muslims

New Delhi/Dhaka, August 12 (Udaipur Kiran): In the midst of significant turmoil in Bangladesh, over 200 Rohingya Muslims have been killed in an attack in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. The attack occurred near the Myanmar-Bangladesh border in Rakhine Province as the Rohingya tried to cross into Bangladesh. Survivors have blamed the Arakan Army for the attack.

The Arakan Army is the military wing of the Rakhine ethnic group in Myanmar. However, the Arakan Army has denied any responsibility for the attack.

The attack happened while some Rohingya Muslims were waiting for a boat near a river close to the Bangladesh border. The attack took place in western Myanmar’s Rakhine State, near the border with Bangladesh. To escape, people jumped directly into the river. They were trying to flee the intense fighting in Maungdaw city by crossing the Naf River into Bangladesh.

Doctors Without Borders, an international medical aid group, issued a statement on Friday, August 9, saying that they are treating the wounded from the attacks on Rohingya Muslims, and the number of injured continues to rise. The injured are those who managed to cross the border into Bangladesh.

The Arakan Army began its Rakhine offensive in November 2023 and has taken control of nine out of 17 townships, including one in neighboring Chin State. Since June, the Arakan Army has been attempting to capture the border town of Maungdaw.

In 2017, at least 740,000 Rohingya people were forced to flee to Bangladesh for safety during a military counter-terrorism campaign. Seven years later, these people are still living in camps in Bangladesh and are unable to return to Myanmar due to the country’s ongoing instability.
