Panchyat diktat : Man faces wrath for preventing child marriage in Rajsamand village, ‘Hukka-Pani’ bandh, penalty of 2.61L

Udaipur : Adhering to rules has made life difficult for a law abiding villager at Dasano ki Bhagal village under Khamnor police station limit of Rajsamand district who has been facing the Panchayat wrath for over three months now. Despite a police complaint, no action has been taken yet while the victim is knocking doors fearing safety of his family members.

One MohanSingh so Kalu Singh of the village had arranged marriage of his minor son in April this year. Narendra Singh son of Gopal Singh Rajput informed the authorities and prevented the marriage. MohanSingh was infuriated with the incident and took up the matter with the village panchayat. Narendra who has private job in Ahmedabad went to work and when he returned to his village during Navratri festival, a meeting of the jaati panchayat was held which allegedly ordered social boycott of Narendra and his family. ” The panch jury imposed a penalty of 2lakh 61 thousand rupees on me. They have threatened me that I wouldnot be permitted for cremation at the community shamshan, no one would keep any relationship with my family” Narendra Singh said.

The panchayat reportedly asked the villagers to cut off any kind of communication with Singh’s family members and those found guilty would be imposed with a penalty of 11 thousand, was the diktat, sources said. ” I have to go out often for my work, my mother and wife stay alone when i am working at Ahmedabad. I have safety concerns for my family and hence i reported the matter to police in October but no action was taken. ” Singh claimed. Narendra Singh also alleged that the panchayat members have been pressurising him to withdraw the complaint.

They threatned that they would accuse his mother of being a ‘Dayan’ and drive her out of the village. Frightened of the warnings and even a physical assault, Narendra Singh gave a petition to the IG and then finally an FIR was taken at the Khamnor police station on December 18 against 15 persons. ” A complaint has been registered against few persons of the panchayat. The case is under investigation and the investigating officer is collecting evidences and recording statements of the family as well as the accused persons and people associated with the case” SHO Khamnor Mahesh Chand Meena told Udaipur Kiran.
