New Delhi, April 9, 2025 – As large parts of North India reel under an intense heatwave, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh rainfall and thunderstorm alert for 8 states, promising some relief from the soaring temperatures. While mercury levels are expected to remain high in Delhi, Rajasthan, and surrounding regions, rainfall is on the horizon for several eastern, southern, and western states.

Heatwave Grips North India: No Immediate Relief
Regions like Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat continue to face severe heat conditions. Temperatures have crossed 45°C in Barmer and Jaisalmer, while Delhi recorded a maximum of 40.2°C. The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurgaon, warning of extreme heat during both day and night.
The next 48 hours will remain critical, with the IMD predicting continued heatwaves in East Rajasthan, Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Saurashtra, and Kutch.
Rainfall Forecast: Relief in Eastern and Southern States
According to Skymet Weather Services and IMD projections, light to moderate rainfall is expected in several states between April 9 and April 12:

Bihar: Thunderstorms and lightning are likely today in Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia, and Supaul, with winds reaching 40–50 km/h. Light rain is also possible in Katihar, Madhepura, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Shivhar, Samastipur, Bhagalpur, Khagaria, and Munger.

South India: Rain is likely in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Mahe, and Karnataka. These regions may also experience lightning and gusty winds.

Western Ghats & Coastal Regions: Goa, coastal Karnataka, Maharashtra, and parts of central Madhya Pradesh may witness steady monsoon-like rainfall patterns over the coming days.

Northeast India: Light to moderate rainfall is expected in Meghalaya, Sikkim, Assam, and parts of Tripura. However, rainfall in Meghalaya and Sikkim may be below normal.
Rajasthan Weather Update: From Heatwave to Storm Alerts
While Barmer recorded 45.6°C, nearby districts like Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Kota, and Chittorgarh also touched temperatures above 44°C. IMD forecasts indicate light rainfall and strong winds in parts of Rajasthan between April 10–11, possibly easing the heat briefly.
