Ebola Deaths in DR Congo Exceed 5,000 as Outbreak Spreads to Eight Provinces
The Ebola death toll in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 5,000, according to government data, as the outbreak spreads across the nation.

NEW DELHI, Oct 31: The death toll from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached over 5,000, according to government data. This outbreak, declared in May, has also infected more than 10,000 people.
The Bundibugyo strain of the virus is responsible for this outbreak, which is the worst on record for the country. Authorities have struggled to contain the spread, with the virus now affecting eight of the DRC’s 26 provinces.
Contributing factors to the rapid spread include delayed detection of cases, ongoing conflict, and overwhelmed health services. The outbreak’s severity has drawn international attention, with Nigeria recently reporting its first case, marking the fourth African nation to be affected.
Travel restrictions have been implemented by various governments in response to the outbreak. For instance, Saudi Arabia suspended travel to and from Kenya, including for Saudi citizens, and paused visa issuance for travelers from that country. Similar precautions had already been applied to the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan back in June.
This year’s outbreak is now considered the second-largest ever, trailing only the 2014-2016 epidemic that resulted in over 28,600 infections and more than 11,000 deaths across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
