In a dramatic turn of events, London’s Heathrow Airport has been forced to shut down until midnight following a major fire at a power substation in the western part of the city. The blaze, which broke out earlier today in Hayes, Hillingdon borough, has triggered a significant power outage, leaving more than 16,000 homes without electricity and causing chaos in transportation and daily life.

Heathrow Airport Operations Halted
One of the world’s busiest travel hubs, Heathrow Airport, was hit hard by the sudden outage. Airport authorities confirmed that all operations have been suspended until at least midnight, with flight delays and diversions affecting thousands of passengers. Travellers are being urged to check with airlines before heading to the airport.
Air traffic control and terminal systems have been severely impacted due to the power disruption, raising security and safety concerns. Emergency backup systems are in place, but full operations remain suspended.
Emergency Response in Full Swing
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has confirmed the deployment of 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters to tackle the substation blaze. A 200-metre safety cordon has been established around the affected area.
Officials have evacuated over 150 residents, while those living nearby have been instructed to stay indoors and keep doors and windows shut to avoid exposure to thick, hazardous smoke.
The fire, which began around mid-morning, continues to burn as crews work to bring it under control. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are underway.
Power Outage Impact and Warnings
The substation fire has plunged thousands of homes into darkness, disrupting not only residential power supply but also affecting traffic signals, hospitals, and businesses across parts of West London.
UK Power Networks, the area’s electricity provider, has acknowledged the outage and stated that engineers are working urgently to restore power. However, full restoration may take several hours due to the scale of the damage.
