Bhopal, March 8 – Madhya Pradesh has been witnessing continuous weather fluctuations, with temperatures swinging between chilly nights and warm afternoons. Over the past four days, icy winds from the northern hills have swept across the state, plunging temperatures to as low as 6°C in several regions. Cold waves gripped many cities, leaving residents shivering. However, a shift in weather patterns is imminent, with day and night temperatures expected to rise by 2-3°C in the coming days.

With bright sunshine heating up afternoons, the onset of summer is gradually approaching. By March 15, the heat will intensify, and hotter temperatures are likely to dominate the region. The next 24 hours will continue to witness similar weather conditions, with gradual warming trends expected to set in across the state.
Cold Spell Grips Several Cities, Temperature Drops Below 10°C
According to the Meteorological Department, cold northern winds from the Himalayan region have impacted the weather across Madhya Pradesh, triggering a severe cold wave in multiple districts. For the past four days, intense chill has been observed, with sharp temperature drops recorded in several cities.
The worst-affected locations include Rajgarh, Shajapur, Umaria, Mandla, Nowgaon, and Malajkhand, where bone-chilling temperatures were reported. Several districts also recorded cold wave conditions, making this one of the coldest spells in early March.
On Friday night, temperatures plummeted significantly:
- Kalyanpur (Shahdol) – 6.2°C
- Girwar (Shajapur) – 7.9°C
- Nowgaon, Umaria, Pachmarhi – 8°C
- Mandla – 8.3°C
- Malajkhand – 8.5°C
- Jabalpur – 9.4°C
- Bhopal – 10.5°C
- Gwalior – 11.8°C
- Ujjain – 11°C
- Indore – 13°C
Despite the cold nights, daytime temperatures have begun to show a slight rise, indicating a gradual transition toward warmer conditions.
Gradual Warming Trend: What to Expect in the Coming Days
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that light cold conditions will persist for the next week, with clear skies dominating the weather pattern. No rainfall is expected in the coming days, allowing sunny days and chilly nights to continue.
On Saturday (March 9), cities like Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, and Jabalpur are likely to experience a 2-3°C rise in daytime temperatures, making afternoons noticeably warmer.
By March 15, the winter chill will dissipate completely, and hotter conditions will begin to take over, marking the arrival of summer.
Why is Madhya Pradesh Experiencing Unusual Cold in March?
Meteorologists attribute this unexpected cold wave to northern winds originating from the Himalayan belt. As cool air masses travel southwards, they lower temperatures significantly, especially during night hours.
The presence of a high-pressure system has further amplified this effect, leading to lower-than-average temperatures for early March. However, as the wind patterns shift, temperatures are expected to normalize and gradually increase.
No Rainfall, Clear Skies to Dominate the Forecast
According to weather experts, Madhya Pradesh will witness dry and stable conditions in the coming days, with no precipitation expected. The absence of rain clouds will allow direct sunlight to warm up the afternoons, leading to a steady rise in temperature.
While early mornings and nights will remain cool, afternoons will gradually become hotter, preparing the state for full-fledged summer conditions post-March 15.
