New Delhi, March 28: England’s star wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler has stated that the Indian Premier League (IPL) has had the most significant impact on his cricketing career. Despite struggling with his form recently, particularly during the T20 World Cup 2026, Buttler remains optimistic.
He explained that playing in the IPL allows him to learn from some of the best players and coaches in the world, which greatly aids his performance across all formats for England—Tests, ODIs, and T20s. Buttler emphasized that the conversations and lessons learned during the league enhance his game. He cited the example of legendary player Kevin Pietersen, who improved his skills by learning from Rahul Dravid during the IPL. Buttler himself has had the opportunity to converse with greats like Matthew Hayden, experiences that are typically rare.
In terms of IPL statistics, Buttler has scored 4,120 runs in 121 matches, including 7 centuries and 24 half-centuries. His performance in IPL 2025 while playing for Gujarat Titans was impressive, amassing 538 runs at a strike rate of 163 over 14 matches, solidifying the team’s top order alongside Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan.
However, his recent performance in the T20 World Cup was disappointing, managing only 87 runs in 8 innings. Buttler insists that this does not affect his outlook on playing in the IPL. He approaches each season with renewed enthusiasm and preparation. He acknowledged that form in cricket fluctuates, but it is crucial for players to remain mentally strong and work hard consistently. After the World Cup, Buttler took a short break, which he believes helped him return refreshed.
He also noted that poor performance cannot be attributed to a single factor; every player must analyze their game and strive for improvement. Ultimately, Buttler’s focus remains on delivering strong performances for his team, adapting his play according to the match situation and contributing as needed.
