Udaipur : Few video and audio clips related to demand of money in lieu of ‘good treatment’ to jail inmates in Chittorgarh central jail has raised questions over the functioning of the prison administration. The clips that was leaked on social media on Wednesday, presents a dark and shocking picture of the jail.
The video clip shows a man, who had allegedly gone to meet one of the prisoner, dropping currency notes through the grilled corridor. While in the audio clip, an agent is heard speaking to a person, who was reportedly an acquaintance of one of the prisoner, demanding bribe for sparing the inmate from cleaning the toilets and special considerations. The demand was being made on the name of the jail authority whom the agent said, would be given the money. When asked for a comment, Jail Superintendent DulheSingh refuted all the charges. He claimed the allegations were baseless and false.
“The visiting system is online and days to meet the under trial prisoners are fixed. I have been informed of the audio video clips related to bribe demand in lieu of favors but it seem to have been made by someone to settle grudges.” the officer told Udaipur Kiran. The Jail Superintendent also said that the visiting area is watched by the RAC personnel. ” I have called for an inquiry in the matter to find who made the video and why the money was dropped” he said.
According to sources, the clips were made on February 28 and March 2. The clips suggest connivance of the jail staff in receiving money from the prisoners relatives. Sources claimed despite online system for visiting the jail inmates, one could meet an undertrial prisoner other than the scheduled dates, get extra meeting time on payment of 200 rupees. Similarly, to ensure that the prisoner is spared from the duty of cleaning the toilets and kept in a better barrack, relatives are asked to pay money ranging from rupees 2500 to 10 thousand. In the audio clips an agent Ratan Gurjar who was jailed under the narcotics act, is heard demanding money for giving better treatment to another prisoner Ravi Khateek who had been in jail for few days on charges of bootlegging. The jail superintendent told Udaipur Kiran that both men had been in the jail for some days however, he was unaware of any such bribe demand.
