Apple has launched the first versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11 and tvOS 18, giving non-developers a safer way to test future operating systems. iOS 18 brings a number of new features to compatible iPhone users, including home screen customization options, a revamped Control Center, RCS support, a redesigned Photos app, and iPhone mirroring on macOS. Apple’s updated iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems are expected to be unveiled in September alongside the iPhone 16 series.
How to install the iOS 18 public beta
iPhone users with a compatible device can go to Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates, select iOS 18 Public Beta, and click to try the iOS 18 beta. Users can also download beta versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11, and tvOS 18 using their Apple ID on Apple’s Beta Software Programs page. The Feedback Assistant app allows users to send feedback directly to Apple.
New operating systems are in public beta and may contain unknown bugs and glitches. We recommend not downloading this into your daily driver. Users should also backup their data on their device before starting the download process. It is also recommended that you keep your device connected to a power source until the beta installation is complete.
What’s new in iOS 18?
The iOS 18 public beta supports RCS messaging through the Messages app and provides Home screen customization options that allow users to place icons and widgets anywhere on the Home screen. The latest version has a new design for the Photos app. iOS 18 supports third-party controls in Control Center and a dark mode variant for app icons. Similar improvements were made in the iPadOS 18 public beta. Add a native calculator app to your iPad.
Apple’s AI-based artificial intelligence (AI) features are not included in the iOS 18 public beta. These features will be released in the coming months. These are available exclusively for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models as well as the latest Macs and iPads.
The watchOS 11 public beta includes features such as rest days, live activity, and Apple’s Vitals app. Sequoia’s public beta adds the ability to mirror your iPhone to your Mac’s screen, as well as a dedicated app for passwords. The tvOS 18 beta adds Amazon’s X-ray-like InSight features to Apple TV Plus content.
