Colombo, February 16: India secured a significant victory against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2026, winning by 61 runs in a high-stakes match held on Sunday. Following the win, Indian players notably refrained from shaking hands with their Pakistani counterparts, a gesture reflecting their remembrance of the victims of the Pulwama attack.
The tragic incident, which occurred on April 22, 2025, in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, primarily targeting tourists. The terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba claimed responsibility for the attack.
In retaliation, India launched a military operation named ‘Operation Sindoor,’ targeting several terrorist bases within Pakistan, which heightened military tensions between the two nations.
During the Asia Cup 2025, the Indian team had previously faced Pakistan in three matches, maintaining their stance of not shaking hands with the opposing players, a decision that sparked considerable controversy at the time.
In the recent match in Colombo, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav did not shake hands with Pakistani captain Salman Agha during the toss. Following their historic victory, the entire Indian team continued this approach, opting to shake hands only with their teammates and the umpires.
Batting first, India scored 175 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, with Ishan Kishan leading the charge, scoring 77 runs off 40 balls, including 3 sixes and 10 fours. Captain Suryakumar Yadav contributed 32 runs to the total.
In response, the Pakistani team was bowled out for just 114 runs in 18 overs, with Usman Khan scoring 44 runs off 34 balls and Shaheen Afridi adding 23 runs.
