Heavy Rain Batters Raipur and Several Parts of Chhattisgarh, IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts

Raipur, May 31: Torrential rains accompanied by gusty winds lashed Raipur and several districts of Chhattisgarh on Friday, bringing much-needed relief from the intense summer heat of Jeth month. The downpour, which began late Thursday night, continued into the morning hours, flooding several roads and low-lying areas in the state capital.

Heavy Rain

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), widespread rainfall was reported in Durg, Rajnandgaon, Bilaspur, and across Bastar division, turning the weather pleasant and cool in many places.

Orange Alert in Central and Northern Chhattisgarh

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for the following districts:

  • Kondagaon, North Bastar Kanker, Dhamtari, Balod, Rajnandgaon, Gariaband, Mahasamund, Raipur, Baloda Bazar, Janjgir-Champa, Raigarh, Bilaspur, Korba, Durg, Bemetara, and Mungeli

These areas are expected to witness:

  • Thunderstorms

  • Lightning

  • Moderate rainfall

  • Winds gusting at 30–40 km/h

Yellow Alert for Other Regions

A Yellow Alert has also been issued for:

  • Bastar, Narayanpur, North Bastar Kanker, Rajnandgaon, Mahasamund, Janjgir-Champa, Raigarh, Bilaspur, Korba, Jashpur, Bemetara, Kabirdham, and Mungeli

These regions may experience light to moderate rainfall, and residents are advised to remain cautious, especially in areas prone to waterlogging or poor visibility.

Cause of the Rainfall

Meteorological experts attribute the downpour to convective development, a localized weather phenomenon commonly seen during transitional seasons. This system has triggered intense rainfall particularly from Rajnandgaon to Mahasamund, covering central Chhattisgarh.

Advisory for Residents

People in the affected areas are advised to:

  • Avoid low-lying roads and waterlogged streets

  • Stay indoors during lightning or thunderstorm activity

  • Follow IMD and local administration advisories

With the monsoon inching closer, the rains may signal an early transition into wetter conditions for central India.
