The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Ministry of Communications recently issued an advisory for calling from certain numbers. According to the Telecommunications Ministry, such calls are being received by citizens and the callers are threatening mobile phone users to block their mobile numbers in the name of the DoT.
These callers threaten cell phone users by saying their numbers are being used for illegal activities. This practice is similar to the way users are blackmailed in CBI-related cybercrimes, where criminals pose as CBI officials and claim to have received illegal packages on their behalf.
“Dangerous” WhatsApp Numbers
DoT has also issued an alert on WhatsApp calls from foreign mobile numbers. These numbers: like +92-xxxxxxxxx – pose as government officials to deceive people.
The Ministry of Telecommunications has warned mobile phone users that cybercriminals are trying to extort or steal personal information through such calls to commit cybercrimes and financial fraud. The DoT also states that it will not allow anyone to make such calls on its behalf and advises people to be vigilant and not share information about receiving such calls.
Where can such scams be reported?
The Ministry of Transport has advised the public to report such cases. Fraudulent communications in the “Chakshu Fraud Suspected Communications-Report” center of Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in). Such proactive reporting helps DoT prevent misuse of communications resources, including through cybercrime and financial fraud.
Additionally, citizens can check their mobile connections on their behalf in the “Know Your Mobile Connections” feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in) and check the mobile connections that they are not using or do not need to identify. report
The Ministry of External Affairs has also advised citizens to report any incidents of cybercrime or financial fraud to Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930 or http://www.cybercrime.gov.in.
