Flávio Bolsonaro left Brazil for the United States on Wednesday following his defeat in the presidential run-off election. The far-right senator and his family used a private jet after crossing into Argentina from Brazil.

Bolsonaro lost to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by 4.4 million votes and did not concede. He accused the election of fraud without providing evidence. In a letter shared online, he claimed to be the “leader of Brazil” and asserted that he would lead the opposition from the US.

His departure raised questions about his motivations, especially since he ignored a Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports, linked to a money laundering investigation. Some voters criticized his actions as cowardly.

“He’s acting like a coward who’s unwilling to face the consequences of his actions,” said Cristiana Cunha, a voter in Sao Paulo.

Upon arriving in Miami, the US State Department confirmed that it would grant visas to Bolsonaro and his family. US President Donald Trump commented, stating he viewed Brazil’s election as “very strange” and implied that Bolsonaro faced political persecution.

Bolsonaro made his journey after a Supreme Court justice expressed concerns he might attempt to flee due to ongoing legal issues. He first crossed into Argentina before taking a private flight to Miami, with a stop in Ecuador.

While the Bolsonaro family has been embroiled in controversy, the Liberal Party, which they belong to, acknowledged the election outcome. Political analysts suggest Flávio’s flight may lead to shifts in conservative politics within Brazil.

“Flávio’s defeat was humiliating for the family,” observed Paulo Roberto de Souza, a political analyst.

Flávio Bolsonaro has yet to specify how he will lead the opposition from the United States or how long he plans to remain there.
