Flavio Bolsonaro Flees Brazil After Election Loss, Heads to Ecuador and Miami
Flavio Bolsonaro fled to Miami after losing Brazil's presidential election to Lula, amid ongoing investigations.

Flavio Bolsonaro, a Brazilian senator and defeated presidential candidate, arrived in Miami on Wednesday after departing from Brazil, where he faced ongoing criminal investigations. His flight included a stop in Ecuador, and he was accompanied by his wife and two daughters.
Bolsonaro’s departure follows a presidential runoff election on October 28, where he lost to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who secured 51.8% of the votes compared to Bolsonaro’s 48.2%. The loss marked a political setback for the Bolsonaro family, as Flavio was expected to build on his father’s political legacy.
Upon his arrival at Opa-locka Executive Airport, Bolsonaro faced criticism from Lula, who described his exit as a “shameful” act that suggested he had something to conceal. Lula remarked, “A person who sneaks out of their country must have something to hide.”
Brazil’s Supreme Court had previously ordered the cancellation of Bolsonaro’s passports amid concerns he might flee the country due to the investigations against him for alleged corruption and money laundering. Despite this, he managed to exit Brazil, first crossing into Argentina before boarding a private plane to Ecuador and finally to the U.S.
In his first statement after leaving Brazil, Bolsonaro claimed, “I did not flee Brazil; I left for the sake of Brazil.” He also reiterated allegations of electoral fraud without providing evidence and described his situation as being persecuted politically. U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the situation, stating, “We gave him a pass to come into the country.”
Political analysts speculated that Flavio’s flight could prompt internal conflicts among conservative factions in Brazil, reducing the Bolsonaro family’s influence over future political scenarios. Some voters expressed frustration, with one saying, “He’s acting like a coward who’s unwilling to face the consequences of his actions.”
Despite his loss, Flavio Bolsonaro has not officially conceded. He indicated intentions to challenge the election results, citing irregularities regarding the polling hours extension that was implemented due to bad weather and transportation issues.
Bolsonaro’s family history in U.S. politics is significant; his father, Jair Bolsonaro, previously left Brazil for Florida following his electoral defeat, and his brother Eduardo has been active in U.S. political lobbying. It remains unclear how long Flavio plans to stay in the U.S. or what steps he will take regarding his legal challenges in Brazil.
