Fennel: A Natural Tonic for Summer Wellness

New Delhi, March 6: With the departure of winter, the summer season has arrived, bringing with it the challenge of keeping the body cool in the scorching heat. Ayurveda recommends the consumption of fennel, which not only helps cool the body from within but also offers numerous benefits for both the body and mind.

According to Ayurveda, the simplest and most natural way to consume fennel is by using its seeds. Fennel is known for its cooling properties, helping to regulate body temperature, prevent heat strokes, and soothe stomach heat and burning sensations. It is considered a herb that balances the Pitta dosha, making fennel water, sherbet, or tea particularly beneficial during hot weather. Not only does it provide relief from heat, but it also aids digestion and alleviates various everyday issues.

Fennel is rich in antioxidants, antibacterial properties, and pain-relieving qualities. It strengthens the digestive system and addresses problems such as gas, bloating, indigestion, constipation, and cramps. Chewing fennel seeds or drinking fennel tea after meals can reduce feelings of heaviness and discomfort in the stomach.

According to the National Institute of Ayurveda, fennel helps maintain smooth digestion and provides relief from chronic issues like Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

One of the special advantages of fennel in summer is its ability to expel excess heat from the body, reduce inflammation, combat fatigue, and refresh the mind. Regular consumption can aid in weight management, balance hormones, and enhance skin glow. It also helps eliminate bad breath, provides relief from respiratory issues, and assists in flushing out excess water from the body.

Making fennel tea or sherbet is easy. To prepare fennel tea, boil one teaspoon of fennel seeds in one cup of water for 5-10 minutes, strain, and drink warm. Honey or lemon can be added for flavor. For sherbet, grind fennel seeds and strain them in water, adding a little sugar or honey for taste. Drinking fennel water on an empty stomach helps detoxify the body and keeps you cool throughout the day. A mixture of fennel and sugar candy is also very effective in summer.

Fennel is an inexpensive, home remedy that provides both natural cooling and health benefits during the summer. However, it is advisable to consume it in moderation. Pregnant women or those with health issues should consult a doctor before consumption.
