EC deputes high level team to Mizoram

Election Commission will send a high-level team to Mizoram on Friday to hold further discussions with state government officials and leaders of the NGO Coordination Committee on the current stand-off in the state.

For the last two days, the NGO coordination committee, led by YMA, was protesting against the removal of the Principal Secretary (Home) Lalnunmawia Chuaungo and demanding removal of Chief Electoral Officer SB Shashank. Sources said the committee yesterday evening called off the protest for the time being.

The team will be headed by Deputy Chief Election Commissioner Sudeep Jain. In a statement, the Commission said, it has accepted the broad contours of the resolution passed by the Committee after deliberations with the delegation of the poll body. The Commission also expressed its serious concerns on the violence in Kolasib district during protests against the CEO.

On Tuesday, a three-member Election Commission team had discussed over the demands and points of the NGOs in Aizawl and the outcome was communicated to the poll panel yesterday.
The Assembly elections in Mizoram will be held in a single phase on the 28th of this month.
