Delhiites, brace yourselves for the heat onslaught as the national capital is set to experience a noticeable rise in temperature over the next 48 hours. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), maximum temperatures in Delhi may increase by up to 2°C, with sunny skies and stagnant winds contributing to the warming trend.

Sharp Temperature Rise Expected
On Friday, most parts of Delhi witnessed strong sunshine from early morning, pushing the mercury higher. The Safdarjung weather station, which is considered the city’s benchmark, recorded a maximum temperature of 32.8°C, which is 1.5°C above the seasonal average. The minimum temperature was logged at 16.5°C, aligning with normal levels for this time of year.
The humidity levels varied between 84% and 24%, adding a mild discomfort factor during peak afternoon hours.
IMD Forecast: Up to 36°C by Sunday
With the Western Disturbance that brought brief showers and gusty winds earlier this week now cleared, Delhi is once again under the grip of dry and sunny conditions. The IMD forecasts that the maximum temperature could touch 36°C by Sunday, marking the beginning of an early pre-summer heatwave pattern.
Wind speeds are expected to remain below 10 km/h, limiting any natural cooling effect.
Air Quality Update: Still in the Safe Zone
Despite the temperature hike, Delhi’s air quality remains in the “satisfactory” range. As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 144 on Friday.
Here’s how AQI levels are classified by CPCB:
- 0–50: Good
- 51–100: Satisfactory
- 101–200: Moderate
- 201–300: Poor
- 301–400: Very Poor
- 401–500: Severe
What’s Next?
As temperatures continue to rise, residents are advised to:
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during peak hours (12 PM–4 PM)
- Use sunscreen and light cotton clothing
- Keep tabs on weather advisories and health alerts
Delhi is now clearly moving toward early summer conditions, and this weekend could be a preview of the intense heat ahead in the coming weeks.
