Dhaka, July 4 (Udaipur Kiran) — China has made a significant inroad into the friendly relations between India and Bangladesh by securing a contract for drilling oil and gas wells near India’s border. China’s Sinopec International Petroleum Service Corporation has been awarded the contract to drill wells in Sylhet-11, near Assam’s border town of Karimganj, and Rashidpur-13 in Habiganj district, near Tripura’s Khoyi town. The estimated cost of the project is 4.448 billion Bangladeshi Taka.

Approval of the Drilling Proposal

The proposal was approved in a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) held yesterday at the Bangladesh Secretariat, chaired by Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali. At the end of the meeting, Md. Mahmudul Hossain Khan, Secretary of the Cabinet Division for Coordination and Reforms, informed reporters that the wells for petroleum extraction in Sylhet-11 and Rashidpur-13 will be drilled in accordance with the Electricity and Energy Act of 2010. The proposal to finalize the agreement between Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL) and Sinopec International Petroleum Service Corporation has been accepted and will be finalized soon.

This development marks a strategic move by China in the region, impacting the dynamics of Indo-Bangladesh relations and potentially affecting the geopolitical landscape of South Asia.
