CBDT Issues Warning on Fake Tax Deductions and Donations

New Delhi, 13 December (Udaipur Kiran) . The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has intensified its efforts to curb false claims of tax deductions and exemptions. As part of these measures, the CBDT has issued an alert against fake donation claims and is warning taxpayers through SMS and email communication.

The Ministry of Finance stated on Saturday that following the detection of fraudulent donation rackets and suspicious intermediaries, the CBDT has urged taxpayers to voluntarily withdraw any fake deduction claims. The department noted that such false claims have not only triggered investigations but also slowed down the processing of income tax returns (ITR) and delayed refunds this year. Since 12 December, the Income Tax Department has been sending advisory SMS and emails to registered mobile numbers and email IDs.

According to the ministry, the CBDT has asked taxpayers to correct their ITRs voluntarily before strict actions are taken. The Income Tax Department has taken action against many intermediaries involved in filing ITRs with bogus deductions and exemptions under the Income Tax Act. A network of such intermediaries assisting taxpayers in illegally reducing tax liabilities and claiming fraudulent refunds has been exposed.

The investigation revealed that some intermediaries have established a nationwide network of agents who file tax returns with false claims on a commission basis. It was found that large-scale fake claims of donations were made in the names of unregistered political parties or charitable institutions to reduce tax liability and claim fraudulent refunds.

The CBDT has strengthened its data-driven approach to quickly detect suspicious claims and identify high-risk behaviour patterns. One such risk pattern has been recognised among taxpayers who claimed deductions under Sections 80GGC or 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The board noted that many taxpayers have already revised their ITRs for the current assessment year 2025-26 and filed updated returns for previous years.

The Income Tax Department has launched a special NUDGE campaign to provide taxpayers an opportunity to update their ITRs and withdraw any false claims. Since 12 December, advisory SMS and emails are being sent to such taxpayers on their registered mobile numbers and email IDs.

The CBDT advisory urges all taxpayers to ensure that the department has correct mobile and email contact details to avoid missing any communication. More information about deduction rules and filing updated income tax returns is available at www.incometax.gov.in.
