Back Stiffness Can Affect Body Balance — Ayurvedic Remedies Offer Relief

New Delhi, November 12 (Udaipur Kiran): If you often wake up with stiffness in your back or hear a clicking sound while turning or getting up, it may be a sign of developing back strain or imbalance. According to Ayurvedic experts, such problems usually arise from sitting in one position for long hours or lifting heavy objects, but they can also be triggered by poor posture, cold weather, or unhealthy diet.

Ayurvedic remedies for back stiffness

In Ayurveda, back stiffness or “chik” is linked to an imbalance in the Vata dosha — the energy responsible for movement and flexibility in the body. When Vata increases, it causes tightness in muscles and can lead to issues like back pain, arthritis, or slip disc.

Common symptoms include difficulty bending, stiffness while walking, heaviness in the back and shoulders, and pain radiating from the neck down to the lower back.

Ayurvedic and Home Remedies

Ayurveda suggests that lifestyle changes and simple home treatments can ease back stiffness effectively:

  • Warm Oil Massage: Massage the back with lukewarm mustard oil in the morning, followed by a hot water compress. Repeat this therapy in the evening or before bedtime for relief.

  • Salt Water Therapy: Use warm water mixed with salt for compressing the painful area to reduce muscle tension.

  • Hot Bath: Taking a bath with warm water helps relax stiff muscles.

  • Night Massage: Gently massage the back before sleeping to improve blood circulation and reduce pain.

  • Sleep Comfortably: Always sleep on a soft mattress and avoid putting pressure on the affected area.

Dietary Tips

Changing your diet can also aid in recovery:

  • Include moong dal, milk, and other protein-rich foods in your daily meals.

  • Eat plenty of green vegetables and drink turmeric milk at night to reduce inflammation.

  • Soak fenugreek seeds (methi dana) overnight and drink the water the next morning on an empty stomach, chewing a few seeds for added benefit.

During recovery, avoid lifting heavy weights or excessive bending. Gentle walking and light stretching are recommended, but without straining the body. If the pain worsens or persists, consulting a physiotherapist is strongly advised.
