PM Modi Begins Official Visit to Netherlands

The Hague, May 16: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a five-nation tour, having arrived in the Netherlands after his initial stop in the United Arab Emirates. During this visit, he is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Saturday. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi will meet King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima as part of his official engagements.

While in the Netherlands, Modi is expected to address the Indian community residing there and engage in discussions with prominent Dutch business leaders. He will remain in the Netherlands until May 17. This marks Modi’s second visit to the country, with his first visit occurring in 2017. The current trip is significant as it comes at a crucial juncture in India-Netherlands relations, with hopes of strengthening strategic cooperation between the two nations.

Modi’s arrival in the Netherlands is part of his broader diplomatic efforts to enhance India’s strategic, economic, and technological partnerships in Europe. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, announced the visit on the social media platform X, stating, “Good day, Netherlands! PM Modi has arrived. This visit will strengthen various partnerships between India and the Netherlands and provide an opportunity to connect with the largest Indian community in Europe.”

During a special briefing ahead of the visit, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Siby George, highlighted that the partnership has deepened significantly in recent years, covering traditional sectors of trade and investment as well as critical areas such as water, agriculture, and health. He noted that collaboration has also expanded into strategic sectors like technology, innovation, defense, security, semiconductors, renewable energy, education, and maritime affairs.

People-to-people connections remain a vital aspect of India-Netherlands relations, with over 90,000 non-resident Indians and people of Indian origin living in the Netherlands, along with more than 200,000 members of the Surinamese Hindustani community. Additionally, around 3,500 Indian students are currently pursuing higher education across various universities in the country.

This visit carries significant importance, with expectations that it will bolster new strategic dimensions of the partnership forged through ongoing efforts by both nations.
