Udaipur, May 13, 2026 (Daily Kiran): Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences successfully performed a complex and rare surgery on a newborn suffering from a serious congenital condition, giving the child a new lease of life.

According to pediatric surgeon Dr Atul Mishra, the baby was born at PIMS Hospital and was diagnosed with Duodenal Atresia, a severe surgical condition in which a part of the intestine, known as the duodenum, is not properly developed.
The newborn was also suffering from another rare condition called Situs Inversus, where the internal organs are positioned in the opposite direction inside the body. Doctors said that while Situs Inversus alone may not create major complications, its occurrence along with Duodenal Atresia is extremely rare and increases surgical complexity significantly.
Dr Mishra said Duodenal Atresia is generally seen in one out of every 5,000 to 10,000 newborns, but the combination of both conditions together is found only in a very small number of cases worldwide.
The surgery lasted nearly three hours, during which doctors successfully connected the intestines. Due to the reverse positioning of organs, the procedure was technically challenging. The medical team also faced an added challenge as the baby was premature and weighed only 1.7 kg.
After several days of post-operative care and monitoring, the child recovered successfully and was discharged from the hospital.
The surgery involved the support of several specialists, including doctors from the anaesthesia and paediatrics departments along with nursing and technical staff members.
Chairman Ashish Agrawal said the entire treatment was provided free of cost under the Janani Suraksha Yojana. He added that PIMS Hospital continues to strengthen healthcare services in the Udaipur region with advanced medical facilities.
