Guwahati, May 3: On the eve of the Assam Assembly election results, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held a virtual meeting on Sunday with candidates, MPs, state officials, and district presidents of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to review preparations for the counting day.
According to BJP sources, the online meeting focused on coordination, booth-level monitoring, counting arrangements, and post-result organizational strategies as the state awaits a significant electoral decision.
State BJP President Dilip Saikia was also present at the meeting. Senior party leaders discussed district-wise updates and instructed local units to remain vigilant and maintain constant communication with counting agents and election representatives.
The ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is attempting to secure power for the third consecutive time in Assam, while the Congress-led opposition alliance has expressed confidence in presenting a strong challenge.
Counting for the 126-member Assam Assembly will commence on Monday morning under tight security across the state. According to the Election Commission’s guidelines, postal ballots will be counted first, followed by votes cast through electronic voting machines (EVMs).
Several exit polls have predicted a decisive victory for the BJP in Assam, indicating that the current Chief Minister Sarma is likely to return to power for a second consecutive term. Most analysts estimate that the ruling BJP will easily surpass the majority mark in the 126-member Assam Assembly, with projections suggesting the party could win over 80 seats on its own. The majority mark in the Assembly is 64 seats.
If these estimates prove correct, it would represent another significant mandate for the BJP in the politically crucial northeastern state, further strengthening the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, who took office after the 2021 Assembly elections.
