Oman Evacuates 25 Crew from Burning Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz
Oman rescued 25 crew members from a burning oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, with tensions rising in the area due to Iranian military actions.

STRAIT OF HORMUZ, Oct 31: Oman has successfully evacuated 25 crew members from the RITI, a burning crude oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. The tanker is reportedly registered under the Panamanian flag.
The Omani Maritime Security Centre announced the rescue on Friday. This incident coincides with increased tensions in the area, as Iranian authorities claimed to have halted four tankers using unauthorized routes.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that these tankers were involved in incidents, possibly hitting mines. They stated, “Two offending oil tankers encountered incidents and were brought to a halt in the waters south of the strait,” indicating ongoing maritime challenges.
In a separate operation, Iran’s Navy claimed to have destroyed an unmanned enemy craft in the eastern strait. Iran has intensified warnings to vessels traversing the strait without permission, stating they would face severe consequences.
The U.S. military has disputed Iranian claims about mines, with Central Command chief Brad Cooper asserting that the main transit routes have been cleared of such threats. He said, “The Strait of Hormuz’s internationally recognized primary transit routes have been successfully cleared of Iranian sea mines.” In contrast, Iranian officials have demanded proof of mine clearance.
The situation has critically affected maritime shipping, with UK Maritime Trade Operations indicating shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz has dropped to about 70 percent below pre-war levels.
