Jodhpur, January 8 : Convicted for life imprisonment in the sexual assault case involving a minor girl at his ashram, Asaram, who has been serving his sentence at Jodhpur Central Jail, has now filed a petition for bail in the Rajasthan High Court. This move comes after the Supreme Court granted him temporary bail on Tuesday, marking the first time in 11 years that he was granted bail.

The Supreme Court’s bail was granted until March 31, 2025, in connection with a rape case involving a female disciple at his Gandhinagar (Gujarat) ashram. However, despite this temporary relief, Asaram will not be released from jail due to his ongoing conviction in the Jodhpur rape case. Consequently, Asaram’s lawyers have now approached the Rajasthan High Court with a bail application, citing health reasons as the basis for his request.
Asaram’s lawyer, R.S. Saluja, mentioned that a fresh application for bail has been filed in the Jodhpur rape case in hopes of securing his release.
Background of the Case
Asaram was arrested by Jodhpur police on September 2, 2013, from his ashram in Indore. After a lengthy five-year trial, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment on April 25, 2018, for the sexual assault of the minor girl. In addition, Asaram is also facing charges in Gujarat, where a woman from his Gandhinagar ashram filed a rape case against him. On January 31, 2023, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for this case as well.
Despite the temporary relief from the Supreme Court, Asaram continues to remain behind bars due to the unresolved Jodhpur case. His legal team is now looking to expedite the proceedings in the High Court in hopes of obtaining a release based on health grounds.
The ongoing legal battles surrounding Asaram have attracted significant attention due to the severity of the charges and the high-profile nature of the case.
