Tanvi Patri Advances to Youth Olympics Final, Faces Zhang Yi Xin
Tanvi Patri has become the first Indian badminton player to reach the Youth Olympics final, facing China’s Zhang Yi Xin for gold.

NEW DELHI, Nov 6: Tanvi Patri secured her spot in the women’s singles final of the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, becoming the first Indian badminton player to achieve this milestone. The 15-year-old from Odisha won a gripping semifinal against Japan’s Yuzuno Watanabe, overcoming her in three games with a scoreline of 21-14, 11-21, 21-19.
In her semifinal match, Patri initially took control, winning the first game comfortably. However, Watanabe answered back, taking the second game decisively. The final game was tightly contested, with both players battling fiercely. Patri ultimately prevailed, showing resilience and skill when it counted most. “I am very excited for tomorrow’s match. I just want to give my best,” Patri said.
Patri will face Zhang Yi Xin, the reigning World Junior champion from China, in the final. This matchup marks a challenge for Patri, who previously faced Zhang at the Asia Junior Championships earlier this year, where she narrowly lost.
Zhang advanced to the final by defeating her opponent, Ip Sum Yao, in straight games. She aims to achieve a unique double by winning both the World Juniors and Youth Olympics in the same year.
In the men’s singles category, Mady Sow of France will compete against Riyan Malhan of India for gold. Sow reached the final after comfortably defeating Korea’s Park Jung Bin 21-12, 21-16 in the semifinals, while Malhan won a close match against China’s Hong Tian Yue, finishing with scores of 24-22, 21-13.
Both Sow and Malhan are the first representatives from their respective countries to reach the men’s singles final at the Youth Olympics. After his semifinal win, Malhan noted, “It was a really tough semifinal. Each point was critical, but I managed to handle the pressure at crucial moments.”
This year’s Youth Olympic Games features achievements from young athletes, including Patri’s journey, which has added to India’s growing prominence in badminton competitions.
