Allahabad High Court Bar Association Demands ED, CBI Probe Against Justice Yashwant Varma

PRAYAGRAJ, March 23, 2025 – The controversy surrounding Delhi High Court Senior Judge Justice Yashwant Varma continues to intensify as the Allahabad High Court Bar Association voices dissatisfaction over an internal inquiry, insisting on a comprehensive investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Justice Yashwant Varma

Bar Association President Anil Tiwari has made it clear that internal probes are insufficient given the seriousness of the allegations. He stated that a resolution would be tabled on Monday during a General House meeting, demanding not only a high-level probe but also temporary suspension of judicial responsibilities for Justice Varma until the completion of an independent investigation.

Mounting Pressure and Political Involvement

Tiwari revealed that a proposal recommending impeachment proceedings against Justice Varma would be passed and forwarded to political parties and Members of Parliament (MPs). “Only an impartial probe by central investigative agencies can establish the truth,” he asserted.

The Bar Association’s leadership, including General Secretary Vikrant Pandey, echoed the sentiment that the gravity of the situation requires action beyond the judiciary’s internal mechanisms. The demand for Justice Varma’s temporary removal from judicial functions until the investigation concludes is expected to gain further traction during Monday’s assembly.

Bar Association Warns of Boycott

In a strong stance, Anil Tiwari warned that if the demands of the legal fraternity are ignored, the lawyers of the High Court may consider abstaining from judicial work as a form of protest. The proposed resolution will reflect the growing sentiment among advocates who are calling for transparency and accountability.

Tiwari emphasized, “We are not satisfied with just an internal inquiry. If there is even a shadow of doubt, it is the duty of ED and CBI to investigate thoroughly. Until then, Justice Varma must step away from all judicial activities.”

Calls for Impeachment Proceedings

Several senior advocates have reportedly demanded that the General House formally urge national political parties to initiate impeachment proceedings under Article 124(4) of the Constitution of India. The motion, if passed, would represent a rare and bold step from the Bar Association, underscoring the seriousness with which the allegations are being viewed.

There is growing consensus among the legal community that the matter can no longer be confined within the walls of the judiciary. Advocates argue that involving central investigating agencies would not only restore public trust but also ensure institutional integrity.

Legal Community Stands United

Bar leaders confirmed that Monday’s General House meeting will serve as a platform to rally unified support for further legal and constitutional action, should the matter remain unresolved. The Association is also seeking assurances from political representatives that they will support the motion for impeachment and push for a swift and unbiased probe.
