Apple announced macOS Sequoia as the latest version of its desktop operating system for Mac computers at WWDC 2024 on Monday. macOS Sonoma updates are expected to roll out to eligible Mac models later this year, along with support for new features like iPhone mirroring and a dedicated password app that runs on the company’s devices and Windows PCs. Apple’s Safari browser now has the ability to automatically summarize web pages using machine learning technology. The macOS 15 update is expected to arrive on eligible Mac computers later this year.

Apple adds support for iPhone mirroring in macOS Sequoia. It allows users to wirelessly access their smartphone directly from their computer screen. The company says the feature works even when the phone is unavailable and the screen is locked. Apple also says iPhone notifications will be mirrored on macOS Sequoia, allowing users to interact with notifications and open and interact with apps without having to pick up their phone.
Apple Intelligence, the company’s on-device artificial intelligence system based on the Neural Engine, will also enable new features on compatible Mac computers later this year. It includes a more powerful Siri that can perform actions in apps, correct and overwrite text in supported apps, and generate images via the Image Playground. Apple’s Photos app is also getting an AI upgrade, including the ability to create videos with photo prompts.
Nearly 25 years after the release of the first version of Apple’s desktop operating system, the upcoming macOS Sequoia update finally retires third-party window tile managers like Magnet and BetterSnapTool, along with native support for the same features. Meanwhile, the Messages app adds support for tap reactions for emojis and stickers, similar to iOS 18.
Apple is also updating the Photos app in macOS Sequoia to support displaying collections around specific topics and give users access to improved search results that include content in videos. The Apple Notes app uses Apple Intelligence to transcribe audio and summarize notes.
The company also announced a number of new features enabled by Apple Intelligence, including an image playground, text proofreading and translation, and summary generation. These features are only available on Mac models running on Apple Silicon. This limits support to computers with M1, M2 or M3 chips. According to the company, both the Apple Intelligence and Private Cloud Compute features are designed to protect user privacy while enabling AI capabilities on eligible devices.
